I bought a 300GB IDE hard drive and I want to make it external via IDE to USB. How do I protect it from shock?

Not an external case but an anti-shock metal plate or something?

What kind of laptop should I get for college next year?

I’m probably going to wander around with it all day, so there is a good chance it will get banged up. I’ve been looking into ruggedized notebooks, but they are too big to be practical for me, and I doubt I’ll need a laptop that works in arctic conditions or at high altitudes.

So I decided semi-rugged was my best choice, but I want one that’s in the 10-13 inch range and less than 4 pounds. The only ones I could find that small were the Panasonic Toughbook thin and light series and I was hoping for more options; are there others out there?

FYI: I will probably be using it mostly to go on the internet and write papers. I always have a couple internet windows up browsing through myspace or facebook. I’m not a gamer. I like to listen to music and watch movies, but I’m sure I can get a separate CD/DVD drive. It would be convenient if it had good sound, though.

What are your favorite laptop brands?

How do I know which processor and memory (and motherboard?) to pick for a new computer?

I’m thinking of getting a new desktop computer, but I have NO idea which processor to pick. I Don’t do gaming, I use the internet all the time, e-mail, downloads, streaming radio and tv/video, Cds, DVDs, Word Processing, research journals, online databases etc. Often have 25 to 30 tabs open in 2 different browsers. My concern is performance, and that the amount I pick will last me through many OS upgrades, and remain relevant.

I want the OS to work with the processor, which is important. (There will be 4 Hard Drives of 1.5 TB each, they will be openSuse (linux), ubuntu (linux), PCBSD (BSD), and openSolaris (Solaris)

For memory I have a choice of 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB (All 800 Mhz)

For Processor I can choose:
(Intel)
Celeron — Dual Core, (2.8 GHz) or D (3.2 GHz)
Pentium — 4, (3.0 or 3.2 GHz), or D Dual Core, (2.8 or 3.0 or 3.2 GHz)
Core 2 Duo — (2.13 or 2.66 or 3.0 or 3.16GHz
Core 2 Quad — (2.33 or 2.4 or 2.5 or 2.66 or 2.83GHz)
Core 2 Extreme Quad — (2.66 or 3.0 GHz)

or (AMD)
Phenom Quad Core 2.2GHz

———————
* As a bonus, I know nothing about choosing motherboards:
4 options:
Socket 775 Core2Duo 133FSB
Intel Core2Quad BLKDG33FBC DDR2-800
Phenom X4/X2 GeForce 7050/DDR2
Intel Core2Quad Extreme S975XBX DDR2-800 no-video
———

*Help, what do all these options mean? How do I pick the best processor, motherboard, and amount of memory? Which ones should I avoid? Does 64bit play a role here? AMD vs Intel?

* Sorry if this is too much for one question :)

can upgrades on mac computers be performed by do-it-yourselfers, such as replacing the hard drives?

Are upgrades for mac computers readily available for the do-it-yourselfer, or do the upgrades need to be done by qualified service technicians?

which dvd burners are good?

i attend my family get-to-gethers and usually bring my camcorder with me to record the festivities. i later but then onto dvds so i can give to some relitives. now, i just use the dvd drive thats built into my computer but i think it takes very long to burn. my friend then said to look into exteranl dvd burners, but shortly split on me -_-’ i really dont know anything about external burners and i dont know any of the terminology used to determin the burn rate, how fast it burns and what not. can someone kind of explain to me some of the terminology used to describe a dvd burner? im just looking at bestbuy.com to see whatsa out there, but i dont know which ones burn faster then others. thanks.
also if you have any recommendations, feel free to post, i just feel that my built in dvd reader in my laptop is slooooow
