Where to put my paging/swap file?
April 27th, 2009 Posted by: admin
Since my 5-year-old computer has 768MB of RAM, I have a 3.06GB paging file. But I’m not sure which hard drive it would be best to put it on: my internal or external? Here are some stats:
Internal - OS Drive
Data Transfer Rate: 26MB/s
Access Time: 19ms
Speed: 5400RPM
Burst Rate: 65MB/s
Free Space: 6GB
External - Maxtor Storage Drive
Data Transfer Rate: 22MB/s
Access Time: 16ms
Speed: 7200RPM
Burst Rate: 16MB/s
Free Space: 101GB
Anyone know? I want my PC to be as fast as possible…

If the operating system has more than one hard drive, always place the paging file on a drive which does not contain the operating system files. Also, the page file should not have any file fragments.
A page file size of 150% of physical RAM size is a good balanced number, and this is what we usually recommend. Making it more than 150% does not make much sense, as you essentially begin working with your hard disk as your RAM device, and that’s intolerably slow. Try using 1000 MB.

You want to put your paging file on your internal hard drive. If possible, put it on it’s own dedicated partition and\or onto a hard drive that doesn’t contain your OS (Which I’m guessing is Windows)
By the way, your paging file is HUGE. A bit bigger than it should be if you ask me. Considering how little free space you have, transfer some of your other stuff to the external drive to increase performance. Windows doesn’t behave well if it doesn’t have alot of free space to work with.
There is no situation where putting the paging file on an external hard drive is a good idea.
