How to recover files from relocated hard disk ?

Hi and HELP!
Windows XP Pro crashed and I bought a new hard drive and reinstalled XP Pro on it. I am writing you because I am having trouble moving the files from the old drive to the new.

I ran CHKDSK on the old master drive and made it slave to the new drive. The old drive reports 10 of 120 GB free, and I conclude from that that all my files are there still.
Unfortunately, when I try to enter my directory it says “access denied”. In the old set-up I was the administrator and had the machine password protected. My wife did not have a password on the machine and her files I could see intact and with no access problems, so the old drive seems to work fine.
My question is, how can I open my directory, which I had made “private”? To be clear, I have the old password, the XP pro is legally licensed and I have the CD. No, I didn’t back-up the files, so I really want to get in. Also, I have company confidential info on the machine, so sending out the drive is not an option.
Thanks!

Will GeForce 8600 GT be satisfied with a 300 Watt power supply?

I am trying to build a good PC with unexpansive components. I already know a 300 Wt powers supply for a pretty cheap price (20$). The video card I am buying is GeForce 8600 GT. Other stuff is
Core2 Duo processor.
2 gigs of memory (800 mhz)
SATA hard drive 250 GB 7200rpm
DVD RW, CD RW.

Is this power supply gonna hadle all that? Or do I need a better one?

There are so many ways to help others, that it’s hard to choose. What type of volunteering do you do?

I want to help society to improve, not just in the present, but for the future. What type of community work, activism, or volunteering do you do? Or what areas do you feel are truly in need of assistance, but have been overlooked? There are so many areas where one could help that it’s hard to choose. I plan to make major changes in the future, and I want to use my time wisely. One person can not change the world, but small changes and help, by many people, can make a huge difference. I don’t have much money, but I do have a huge heart, lots of time, and a strong desire to help others. I think everyone has an obligation to step out of their comfort zones, and help others. It takes some of us longer to do that for various reasons, but once we WAKE UP, there are no excuses for not reaching out to others, or working on some level to help make a positive change for society. Thanks

Had to format my hard drive and start over. Can’t get my computer to see the 1394 connection on my home network.

Upgrade or replace Dell 8250?

I find that the loading on programes/online games/etc. is sooo slow.

1) Based upon my system below, does there appear to be something wrong..or just an outdated PC.

2) If just outdated, will getting more memory (like another 512MB) help enough or do I need to get a new PC? Is it worth it to pour more $ into this machine?

How do I delete (uninstall, whatever) an extended dos partition on a logical drive?

I inherited a used computer that had a primary partition with WinME installed, plus an extended dos partition. I want just one large partition with WinXP Pro installed. I have tried using FDISK to remove the extended dos partition with no luck. Other than buying Partition Magic (or similar), is there anyway to get my hard drive back to just one big partition?
Rojoe
Thanks for your answer. I bookmarked that site for future reference. However, I am familiar with the “normal” FDISK and formatting process. But for some reason, this computer will not allow me to delete the extended DOS partition. It says I cannot do it because I have a primary partition. When I try to delete the primary partition, it says I cannot do it because I have an extended DOS partition. Sounds like Catch 22 to me. I am not familiar with “partition” problems since I never use more than one partition on my drives. I just want one big partition so I can store as much as possible as easily as possible. And nothing I do seems to get rid of that extra partition.

Hard drive works in one computer, and another, but then when putting back into original, it doenst work ?

I took my laptop hard drive out of my computer and put it into my sisters desktop using a 2.5” to 3.5” ide converter. The hd at first didnt boot, I fooled with the jumper, and then her system detected it as slave and booted into her install. Then her windows installation mounted my drive so I could access it. I backed up tons of files (gigs, so the drive worked in her computer) and then turned off the computer. I unplugged my drive and returned it to my laptop to find that it will no longer boot.

I screwed with every possible jumper setting with no avial. The dang thing doesn’t detect at all in the BIOS so I know it is a hardware issue. But I also know the HD is not dead becuase I have put it back into my sisters desktop and it is working fine right now.

Any ideas?

If I get a dedicated server, can I use it for data backup?

If I rent a dedicated server (Not a shared server, or VPS) Can I use it for off site backups? Provided I order a few large hard drives with it?
