How to recover files from relocated hard disk ?
Windows XP Pro crashed and I bought a new hard drive and reinstalled XP Pro on it. I am writing you because I am having trouble moving the files from the old drive to the new.
I ran CHKDSK on the old master drive and made it slave to the new drive. The old drive reports 10 of 120 GB free, and I conclude from that that all my files are there still.
Unfortunately, when I try to enter my directory it says “access denied”. In the old set-up I was the administrator and had the machine password protected. My wife did not have a password on the machine and her files I could see intact and with no access problems, so the old drive seems to work fine.
My question is, how can I open my directory, which I had made “private”? To be clear, I have the old password, the XP pro is legally licensed and I have the CD. No, I didn’t back-up the files, so I really want to get in. Also, I have company confidential info on the machine, so sending out the drive is not an option.
Thanks!

Upgrade or replace Dell 8250?
1) Based upon my system below, does there appear to be something wrong..or just an outdated PC.
2) If just outdated, will getting more memory (like another 512MB) help enough or do I need to get a new PC? Is it worth it to pour more $ into this machine?

How do I delete (uninstall, whatever) an extended dos partition on a logical drive?
Rojoe
Thanks for your answer. I bookmarked that site for future reference. However, I am familiar with the “normal” FDISK and formatting process. But for some reason, this computer will not allow me to delete the extended DOS partition. It says I cannot do it because I have a primary partition. When I try to delete the primary partition, it says I cannot do it because I have an extended DOS partition. Sounds like Catch 22 to me. I am not familiar with “partition” problems since I never use more than one partition on my drives. I just want one big partition so I can store as much as possible as easily as possible. And nothing I do seems to get rid of that extra partition.

Hard drive works in one computer, and another, but then when putting back into original, it doenst work ?
I screwed with every possible jumper setting with no avial. The dang thing doesn’t detect at all in the BIOS so I know it is a hardware issue. But I also know the HD is not dead becuase I have put it back into my sisters desktop and it is working fine right now.
Any ideas?
