Missing D and E drives on my computer?

Ok, here is exactly what happened. I have 2 dvd drives, one is an internal drive while the other is external and able to burn dvds. I had NERO 6 on it and recently bought the new version, NERO 8.
When I tried to install it, it told me that I first had to uninstall version 6 before installing V8. I did and rebooted and suddenly BOTH drives would not work.
I clicked on MY COMPUIER and only drives A and C are listed, I have a Mass storage hard drive and when I turn THAT one on, it shows up as drive F but that’s all, I went into MY COMPUTER and both missing drives have a yellow exclamation mark next to them. When I checked on PROPERTIES of both drives it said-

“Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)”

I have unhooked and rehooked the external drive and the AUTOMATIC NEW HARDWARE feature DOES detect the drive, even the exact model number of it, but then says that there was a problem and that the newly installed drive might not work properly.
That external drive is connected to a 4 usb port and it shows the green CONNECTION light on.
I have other hook ups to that usb port and those work fine.
I figure that since that ext drive came with the NERO 6 pack, then that’s why I somehow lost it, but why would the int drive also be affected???
I’ll put in a CD and the drive’s light does go on, it spins then dies down, same thing for the int drive on the tower.
Everytime I shut down the comp that ext drive even lights up before the comp completely shuts down.
Has anyone had this kind of specific problem?

try by reinstalling your ports and XP.

The easiest thing to do first is a system restore to a time before you did the installation. That will restore your settings and hopefully your drives.
If that does not work try this tweak —
This solution I found on the Microsoft website seems to point exactly to the problem you are experiencing.

go to programs accessories click on system tools , system restore and restore ur computer to previous date when it was working fine then everything will be solved , since the drivers are not compatible with ur drive with nero 8 its happening
