What documentation do I need to drive in Germany and France?

I have a valid US passport and state-issued driver’s license, what else do I need to be able to drive in Germany and France? Thanks!

I’m living here(Germany), and I had to take a driver’s test. I’m not sure about if you’re just visiting though. Talk to someone at the airport or at the rental car place for a temp license

A driver from the USA needs either
    - a national driver’s license plus an official (!) german translation, or
    - an international driver’s license

I got this information from the official “ministry of traffic’s” web site, which is only in german:-,302.1843/Artikel/dokument.htm

You MIGHT get along with only your national driver’s license because I suppose a lot of police officers don’t care about a missing translation. BUT officially it’s a crime (driving without a valid license) and if you get to the “wrong” officer the fine will be high. As well you might get problems renting a car without meeting all requirements.

There’s also an english paragraph on the german automobile club’s site:=
