Why use SATA instead of IDE for a CD/DVD burner?

I’ve built my own PC’s for a number of years, but have never been crazy about having to have ‘only the latest’ technology. I’m not a serious gamer and don’t need a whole lot of computing power for streaming media, etc. I’m thoroughly aware of the advantages of SATA vs. IDE for hard drives; the data transfer rate is much higher with SATA and the cables are much slimmer, allowing for better airflow and less clutter. Even so, the high data transfer rate is limited by the read/write speed of the drive itself.
Tha being said, a CD drive with, say, a max write speed of 52x, amounts to about 7 MB of data per second under perfect conditions. (52 times 150 kB/sec = 7800 kB/sec.) That won’t even come close to maxing out an ATA 133 IDE connection (max speed of 133 MB/sec). With all other factors (FSB speed, memory speed, etc) being equal, it seems that the only real advantage to using SATA with a CD/DVD burner is the smaller cables, and maybe the fact that IDE connections are becoming less common on motherboards. Is there something else that I’m overlooking here?
projectimgoingin,

OK, that makes sense now…I guess it was a matter of not seeing the forest because of the trees. I’m able to burn a single-layer DVD with 4GB of data in about 20 minutes, and it still didn’t even occur to me that DVD write speeds (the “x” in, say, “x”) are MUCH faster than CD write speeds, about 10 times faster. So, a DVD write speed of, say, 6x will easily max out a 133 MB/sec IDE connection and then some. That makes sense as to why they’d move to SATA. And the other posts do make a good point that, at the very least, it’s both a good marketing tool and just keeping up with the times as well. Thanks to all.

how do you put more dvd drives in your p.c?

I have been upgrading my pc,and I wondered if it was possible to put two more dvd drives in my p.c?
I already have two cd/dvd roms in my system and I really wanted to add a light scribe and a blue ray to the collection in my p.c. case.
the IDE only holds two drives, how do you put two more in without taking out the old ones?

I have 2 IDE hard drive’s (160gb. and the other a 40gb.). one is the primary the other is a backup, I added a sata drive (320GB.) to use as a second back up. since I added the SATA now it takes long to boot up and also to connect to internet. The SATA drive has nothing on it so I don’t understand why?

Is there a SATA hard drive enclosure that has USB 2.0 and a 10/100 network connection?

I am looking for a single drive enclosure for a SATA drive that has USB and network connectivity. There are lots that use IDE drive but I have not been able to find any that use SATA drives and have a network connection.

I want to burn a CD, do I have to have a particular type of CD/DVD drive? Or can I just DL drives?

When I check to see what kind of drive it is it says it’s a DVD/CD-ROM ….. IDE-DVD ROM 16x
How can I tell if it has burning abilities?
