Is SATA better for data drive or system?

I have an old 320GB IDE hard drive and a new 500GB SATA hard drive. Obviously the new one is faster but am I better using that for my system/programs drive or my data drive? Which one would take more advantage of the drive’s higher speed.

can you do “raid” with “ide?”?

My husband wants to put another disk drive in our computer for back up, and he says we can do it with “raid” but our disk drive is “ide.” Is this expensive?
