my motherboard wont enter set up when I connect my IDE HD or DVD drive?

i’ve just assembled some new components to make a new computer. My motherboard wont enter setup when an IDE HD or DVD ram drive is attached to it.

The HD hasnt even been formatted yet (therefore no instructions or drivers for the DVD drive). Where do I go from here? How can i get windows loaded on this bad boy. Thanks in advanced

by not enter setup I mean that I hit ‘DEL’ and then I see a flashing DOS cursor. But when I disconnect the IDE items and hit ‘DEL’ I get taken to the motherboard setup.

thanks in advanced
I have the HD set up as master and the DVD set up as slave.

when I disconnect the drives I can enter setup. So I set the boot disk priority there (windows cd first, HDD second)…turn off the system, reconnect the IDE drives and then I get a ‘no bootable disk found’ message.

Round IDE cables the same as Flat IDE cables?

Probably a stupid question but right now Im using those gray, fat, flat IDE cables for my DVD Burner and my regular DVD drive. I want to get one of those cool UV round IDE cables to save space, especially around the video card/HDD area (tiny space there!). They are the same thing right? It won’t explode when I plug it in?

can you do IDE-RAID on a laptop like the follow?

My laptop’s been in use for 3 years and i feel like it’s time to do a bit of precautionary work in case the hdd dies on me. :)
Can i get an extra 2.5′ HDD that is the same capacity as my existing one in the laptop, put that in an enclosure, connect to my laptop as an external USB drive, and run IDE RAID with the internal hard drive and the one connected by USB?

In case the internal hdd dies, i can easily put the ext. one in and boot my system without any problems right?

just how fast is 1396b hard drives?

ok so i’m interested in learning about firewire. as i understand there is 1394a and 1394b. 1394b is the fastest so far. i want to know if it is faster than usb 2.0. i think the 1394b stuff has a 800 Mbits/sec of data transfer.
the USB 2.0 is USB 2.0 has a raw data rate at 480Mbps. i was wondering if someone could confirm this for me. also
lets say you do have a desktop and you buy the 1394b card and get a 1394b cable and hook it up to a 1394b external Harddrive..would it be bottlenecked by the Bus speed of the motherboard? would it be bottlenecked by the speed of the Hard drive? if it is bottlenecked by the hard drive at what speeds will you see diminishing returns? 7,200rpm,10000rpm? 15k? i’d like to know what people have been doing.
i’d like to get an external hard drive firewire800 and use it for storing all my songs on or maybe my samples. i wonder if the transfer rate would be faster than IDE? i have a lot of questions in this post. so another question is would firewire 800 be faster than an internal Hard drive connected via IDE or a SATA hard drive connected internally? i think these are some good questions that need to be investigated. i mean how fast is FIrewire 800 in real live applications? is it just as fast as SCSI? i once had a 15k scsi hard drive and then i got the adaptec 39160 card and it was fast. the only problem i had with it was that it required legacy drivers that XP didn’t have so i had to reinstall my whole operating system to get XP to recognize the drive. but once i got it started…it was quick. pretty rediculous. i’d love to know what everyone thinks about this.

IDE Slave/Master Computer question?

Does anyone know if i can hook up a hard drive as ide secondary slave if the secondary master is a dvdrw drive? If so should the jumper be blank on the HD?
Jumper settings i can figure out i really just need to know if it is possible to have a HD as a secondary slave when the secondary master is a dvdrw drive.

I’d like to replace change the hard drive in my computer - it’s an IDE interface, so can I use?

a SATA to IDE converter cable, or an IDE/ATA100 or 133-type connector? I’m not sure what kind of IDE connector it is, because the computer is a 2002 Emachines retail build.
Very informative, thank you. So it’s only a matter of cache speed and connector type?
