ok, so my laptop’s hard drive is broken and i threw it out. the laptop is kinda old, so i want to try and run any linux distrbution on the laptop. the cd drive is not working, the floppy is not also working. so i bought a new laptop HD? is it possible to boot from the hard drive?
i can add files on the new laptop by connecting it to an external HD connection via usb on my desktop.
so what files do i need to download to run that stuff

why do CD drive have a lid, eg stereos playstations, whereas DVD drives have trays?

CD-ROM sockets/pins?

There are 3 types of sockets/pins on the back of cd-rom drive. Two of them are power socket/pin and IDE pins/socket. What is the other one (the smaller one). Is there any problem if it doesn’t attached to the mother board? What is its function?

It says the device cannot start error code 10? The only problem is that the bios recognizes it but it doesnt show up in my computer. In the device manager theres a symbol next to it which is saying theres a problem but i cant figure out whats wrong.

If I was to reformat my laptop’s hard drive, would the CD drive still work (or the drives on my desktop computer if I reformatted it)? and if not, how would you reinstall it? Also, how do you reformat it without starting Windows?

More Details, The Cd Rom does show up under my Computer as drive D:/ When you open the drive door is does accept the cd and it will play music cd’s. It just will not run data from a program such as D:setup.exe. The drivers are in place and the system hardware manager shows the drive name, under drive properties, it shows that the drive is enabled and working properly. But it ain’t working. All programs that I try to install just sit there. Thanks for all your help, but we haven’t hit on the problem yet. I think it is a simple little windows xp thing, but I haven’t found it yet. All suggestions would be appreciated.
