External hard drive not working?

I recently loaned my Maxtor 500 gig hard drive to my friend so he could back up his computer. When he returned it, i plugged it into my desktop pc to find that it won’t connect. the computer doesn’t recognize it, and the light on the hard drive won’t turn on. I plugged it into my laptop and it functioned just fine, with the light on and file interaction with the computer.

What’s going on here?
how can i fix it?
thanks

Can you change the size of a drive partition in Windows?

Just re-installed windows on this computer, it was a bit of a bothed job but for some reason it installed it on a new partition, but the partition is only 2 gig in size, which is a bit small for all the progamrs and stuff. the partition is part of a 112gig hard drive, so can i shift it a bit so it’s slightly bigger, cause i worry i won’t even be able to fit all the updates on it…. :(

what can i do to speed up my computer like it was when i first bought it?

ive formated and reinstalled windows and nothing really makes a diffrence. im thinking the hard drive that carry windows are bad. (i hear alot of noise coming from the hard drives). is that why computers slow down over time or is it something else and how can i fix it?

also, can i tranfer all my data that windows is located on and transfer it all to another drive so i dont have to go through the process of reformating and reinstaling everything( if its the hard drives)?

these are my computer specs:
emachines t2482
windows xp sp2
geforce 6200 graphics card
1 gig of ram (2 slots)
2 dvd/cd burners
300W PSU (do i have enough power?)
4 usb ports all occupied by:
2 external hard drives
printer and wireless keyboard

the computer is probaly 6 yrs old thanks (10 points)
i defrag the drives, run virus and spyware software and ive been running 2 512 sticks of memory in it for 4 yrs and its still slow and lockes up a lot and there seems to be nothing i can do about it. sometime the computer will reset without warning. im thinking its lack of power for the 300w psu. or the drives are damaged. my main drive is the original.

is this desktop worth it?

i’m asking this for a third time. i don’t need to know your opinion on dells. all i need to know is if this is worth it (exactly why or why not). i can probably talk him down. so here we go again…

it’s $275

i will add 4 gigs total. i have a raedeon 2600 pro 512mb graphics card already and i’ll add vista ultimate (both are compatible). i already have a 250 sata drive as well.

here is what comes w/ it (all dell):

19 inch LCD, Windows XP Pro SP3, Office 2007 Enterprise, Nero Ultra, I have 256 DDR2 ram in the machine, but it is a very cheap upgrade. 3.2 Pentium 4 HT Processor 120 GB Hardrive, DVD/CDRW Drive, also a USB Mouse and Keyboard Mark

any haggling suggestion for 1 or 2 of these. he has a bunch.
Edit/Delete Message
i like gaming and i had a dell with a 2 gig processor and 2 1/2 gigs ram and only 1 game (assassins creed) froze up a little when using sword so i figured better proccesor and more memory…
thanks guys for actually giving good answers. sometimes yahoo answers get on my nerves! haha. just the 19inch lcd is good itself too. i am going to add vista (which i have already) and open office so thats not an issue. as far as telling what socket number it is can anyone tell? here are the specs from dell.

Why wont my IDE Hard drive be recognized by my motherboard even though its running? The main drive being SATA.

I just built myself a new system and have a sata drive running xp, and an IDE for storage, but for some reason my MOtherboard is not picking up it having the IDE drive plugged into it, The IDE drive is spinning so I’m not sure whats the matter. Its a Gigabyte mobo so maybe I’m missing some important detail one way or another I’m not sure. Its a decent sized 150 gig western digital IDE drive, just hoping im not leaving out any information. I’m positive I dont need jumpers, so that rules that out.

Since when do HDs come preformatted?

I just got a WD “My Book” external 500GB hard-drive and instead of putting the manual/trial-software on a CD, they preformatted the WHOLE drive as FAT32 and stored half a gig of stuff hidden on the drive.

Every drive I’ve got in the past, I have to initialize and format in Disk Manager before it can be accessed…

Since when do HDs come preformatted with stuff on them?

I recently installed a seagate 320 GB serial ATA hard drive to be the system drive of my new machine?

But it only shows up as 120 gig. I ahve read that you need to inst all drivers or soem support software for serial AT to work properly. And everything ive read says to do that before you install the drive. How is that possible if the drive i am using is set to be my system drive. Or is this not possible. Is serial ata only used as a secondary storage
