Replacing Motherboard means I need to reformat or Re-install OS?

I am replacing a dead motherboard and because the machine is SO OLD, it was impossible to find a direct replacement. this is going into a pre-built machine, so it has the OEM version of XP.

I was hoping this to be a cheap repair as the computer is old enough, but good enough for my daughter (she doesn’t need a $500 computer to learn typing and shapes/colors/letters/words).

I only have 1 hard drive for the machine and no other available IDE (or ATA) hard drives around that I could reinstall on. I don’t know where all her disks are for her games and don’t feel like hunting them down, plus she has files saved on the computer, so I don’t want to reformat.

Can I clone the hard drive (or backup copy the hard drive) to my main computer’s backup drive (a 1TB external) and then reinstall or repair the windows OS, and then restore image, or would the restore image just mess up the OS reinstall?
It’s funny, someone intelligent, or someone who thinks they are computer savvy are giving you all thumbs down…

I’m sorry, but if I am getting a handful of answers that it WILL work, I’m going to have to go with the majority.

will choose best answer when they become available. Thank you all for the responses thus far.

ANYONE ELSE?

hard drive swap, your thoughts and pointers?

recently my computer took a dump on me. the hard drive is in working condition (barely) but the rest of it went south, namely the keyboard, disk drive, and for the final nail in the coffin; the screen.

i managed to disect my laptop and remove the hard drive, and my brother has a similar laptop that will probably accept my hard drive. so i want to open up his laptop, remove its hard drive and put mine in, then go online and back up all my stuff on carbonite.

this will only be temporary and as soon as i am done i will put his hard drive back. but he is afraid that the problems with my hard drive will transfer over to his computer, but as far as i can tell that won’t happen at all.

can someone lend some advice to comfort my brother and convince him to let me swap hard drives to back up my data. or if i’m wrong let me know and maybe give me some pointers on the correct way to go about this.

and on a side note; where can i get external hard drive kits to turn a regular HD into a portable one?

thank you in advance for your time.

Creating a logical disk in Windows XP from two hard drives?

I have a PC that I use for storage, and for playing downloaded content on my TV; it has two 40gb IDE hard drives which are on the same IDE channel. Is there a way in Windows XP to create one logical 80gb hard drive from the two without setting them up in some kind of RAID array?

Instead of having a 40GB C: drive and a 40GB D: drive I would just like to have one 80GB C: drive.

Is there some way to do this with mount points or anything? I’m also willing to have a small (6GB or so) C: drive with just windows on it, and create a ~74GB D: drive.

I’m shooting for seamlessness, so that I can just dump all kinds of files into one folder without having to disseminate them between two hard drives.
