Dell Inspiron 2650 upgrade question?

I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop and would like it to run faster if possible. I have checked Dell.com and found RAM and hard drive upgrades. I have heard adding RAM will improve the speed, so I plan on doing that. But will adding a larger hard drive improve anything as well? I have a 40G hard drive now, and use around 50 percent of the space. I don’t necessarily need more space because I also have a newer desktop with a larger hard drive. However if it would improve efficiency of the laptop I would consider it. (Simply getting a new laptop is out of the question right now).

Also, if I do get a new hard drive, what happens to all the information stored on the old one? Are there means of transferring all of my software or would I have to find all my installation CDs and kind of start from scratch?

Any help is appreciated!

Problem with my Western Digital 1000GB My book Studio edition external hard drive?

i have bought a new WD external hard drive last week and i want to know if i should format the hard first or not?
because as i plug it to my laptop you can’t browse the hard. it seems there is no partition on it.
and also there is no explanation in its box. it is seems it should be as easy as a pie to connect a new hard drive but i doubt if i should format it.
my hard is a “Western Digital 1000GB My book Studio edition external” one !

My new hard drive crashed. I think the circuit board was fried. Who does cheap data recovery?

This was my secondary drive with my music and text files. The drive was not pried open and makes no sound while the computer is running. The drive does not appear in My Computer, nor in Disk Management. It is a one month old Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320Gb. It has about 100Gb of data on it. My PC runs Vista. It will probably require “clean room” processing. Thanks for your help.

Crashed Hard Drive?

I have installed a new hard drive as the Master and I installed my crashed hard drive as the Slave. I booted up the computer and looked under My Computer hoping to see the other hard drive, but it was not showing up. As the computer was booting up the old drive was making noise and it seemed like the internal parts were moving.

How do I get my computer to recognize the Slave drive(I do have the jumpers set correctly)???

Computer can’t boot windows Vista, blue screen error Stop: c0000218?

Every time I start up my computer, it brings me to the black screen that gives me the options on how I want to boot my computer (safe mode, last known good configuration, regular etc.) When I choose one of those options, it just restarts the computer and brings me back to where I started.

I had windows Vista installed for about a year before this happened, however, I don’t have the installation CD anymore so I can’t use the disk to reinstall windows/reformat. But I do have my old Windows XP installation CD, I tried using that and it booted from the CD successfully, when I boot from the CD, it starts to load up the recovery screen, and then brings me to a blue screen error that reads:

“Stop: c0000218{registry file failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\systemRoot\System32\config\security”

So basically, my guess is that either I got a virus that messed with my windows (system32) files or my hard drive went bad. I ran a bunch of test on my hard drive in the BIOS settings to determine whether or not I needed a new hard drive, and it passed all of the tests. So I figured it was just something with the windows files.

So my question to all of you is, how can I get my hard drive formatted to where there is nothing on it without a Windows XP CD? I already tried some software on the internet called “BootIt Next Generation”, but that didn’t really work the way I hoped it would..

The way I figure it, if I can get my hard drive cleared out, I’ll be able to install a fresh copy of Windows XP on it without any trouble.

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

Can I install a new hard drive in my computer?

I just got a new hard drive but it’s exactly the same as the one I have now. So, what I want to do is add it in so I can have twice the hard drive space. If I did this would I have to reinstall anything on my original hard drive or anything or can I just hook it up turn it on and go? Also one last thing both hard drives a IDE so can I hook both hard drives in to the same IDE cables or would that induce some sort of RAID or bad things? I just want two hard drives in my computer with no RAID.

Hard Drive Installation?

I just bought a new hard drive for my computer because I crashed my old one yesterday. The trouble is, the new hard drive does not have the same ports as the old one. I bought a SATA hard drive and was told that it may not be compatible with the computer i bought in 2004 or 2005. Does anyone know what year PCI switched to SATA? Or how to install the new hard drive?
